Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates is a series of exercises designed for students to be able to practice Pilates at home. The exercises are performed on a mat and may also involve the use of other pilates equipment such as foam rollers, stretch physio bands, gym/swiss balls, toning circle and hand weights.

Each of the exercises can be modified in difficulty to allow Pilates to be performed from a beginner to advanced level, with the intensity of the routine increased as the body starts to condition and adapt to the exercises.

Mat Pilates is often performed in classes and is generally advised as the best starting point for beginners as it provides a good foundation in learning specific muscle control before moving onto the machines. Although it may appear relatively simple and easy, students who apply themselves notice improved strength, flexibility, muscle tone and posture within a few months.

For those looking for something more challenging, advanced Mat Pilates classes are seen by some as more difficult than reformer Pilates as it requires the student to use their body and core all of the time without relying on the support of the reformer machines.

Mat classes are small (up to 10 students), allowing students to maximize contact with the teacher and for the teachers to better help students with body control and alignment and to modify routines to aid in any specific injury rehabilitation.

Working alongside trained physiotherapists, teachers are able to incorporate their training and in depth knowledge and understanding of the body systems, injury and rehabilitation to tailor classes around the needs of each student.
