Pilates was developed by John Pilates in the early 20th century and is a physical fitness system and exercise and conditioning routine that aims to create a strong and stable foundation for movement. Pilates helps to build flexibility and muscle strength, specifically core muscle strength, and improves coordination, balance, spinal and pelvic alignment and can also be used as part of a rehabilitation programme for sports and other injuries, especially lower back pain.
